I thought tri met updated OSM themselves, is that not true?
:-o
Never heard of that.
But Maybe??? Do you remember where/how/when you came across that info or rumor??
If so would love to find out!!
It’s something an instructor told me in GIS school but I’ve never been able to verify it
Thanks!!
I really would love to go track this down!
So, follow-up Q’s (if you’re comfortable sharing)…
- What year was that (approx.) ;
- which school;
- and (if you remember) the instructor’s name?
or the specific class it was in?
I've seen an OSM profile or two that said the user works for TriMet. I don't remember who, and don't know whether it was in an official capacity though.
TriMet does have regularly updated datasets at https://developer.trimet.org/gis/ which IIRC used to be ODBL, but doesn't appear to be now. :/
IIRC, TriMet only uses highway/POI information from OSM.
rothg and TimbyT are the only users I know of that are currently working for TriMet. Both of them are also on the OSM US Slack.
Does anyone plan to work on this? If so, you'll need to contact TriMet to clarify copyright on their data since no license is included anymore. If not, I'll close the note.
Hi All,
TriMet has often been asked to maintain the transit data in OSM but does not do so because we have a central database that we maintain for our systems. Major stop and line changes occur at least every quarter, and maintaining the data in 2 places would be a huge expense in terms of staff time/taxpayer dollars. And as of yet there isn't a safe-enough way to automate transit stop/line uploads to OSM that we feel confident in.
Up-to-date GIS files for stops and routes can be found here: https://developer.trimet.org/gis/ as well as in our GTFS feeds. Stops and routes can also be downloaded from the free Metro RLIS data repository though there is sometimes a time lag between TriMet's updates and Metro's.
If you have any further questions or ideas, feel free to email us at GIS@trimet.org or contact me on OSM.
