My OpenStreetMap Journey

I am an active contributor to OpenStreetMap, focusing primarily on mapping and enhancing data in Suffolk, Great Britain. I’m dedicated to improving the accuracy and detail of the map in my local area and beyond.

Mapping Focus and Interests

My mapping work covers a variety of features, often based on local surveys and available open data. My key interests include:

• Public Rights of Way (PROW): I frequently update and add detail to footpaths, bridleways, and other public access routes, often referencing Suffolk County Council’s GIS data and conducting surveys.
• Natural Features: I map woodlands, grassland, ditches, and other natural elements to ensure the landscape is accurately represented.
• Buildings and Land Use: Adding and refining building outlines and correctly tagging land use areas like residential zones and farmland.
• Roads and Paths: Detailing road types, surfaces, access restrictions (like gates and barriers), and adding information like lane counts and height restrictions, often using StreetComplete for on-the-ground verification.
• Points of Interest: Adding amenities such as pubs and fuel stations, and specific details like defibrillator locations.

My recent mapping activity has focused heavily on areas around Stowmarket, Onehouse, Haughley, Shelland, and Buxhall in Suffolk.

Tools and Workflow

I primarily use JOSM for detailed editing and larger mapping tasks. I also utilize StreetComplete for targeted on-the-ground surveys and adding specific details like road surface, lanes, and height information, which allows for efficient mapping while out and about.

I make use of various data sources, including aerial imagery (Bing, Esri World Imagery), local government open data (suffolk_county_council_prow_gis_data, OS OpenMap Local, OSMUK Cadastral Parcels), GPS traces, and crucial local knowledge gained from surveying areas myself.

I am setup to create some on-site imagery during driving and hiking; utilising an old phone with a 4k video camera on a handheld gimbal. I am exploring an upgrade to a 360 camera to provide better imagery of underserved areas and walking routes.
