Hamilton Work

Posted by Kevo on 5 January 2014 in English.

Since noticing that aerial imagery was updated for Hamilton & Burlington I’ve been busy working away on updating OSM data. Burlington was already pretty complete in terms of plazas, roads, laneways, paths, and parks, but I noticed Hamilton needed some lovin’, so I turned my attention there.

I’ve been busy adding in laneways, which were missing in a lot of the old neighbourhoods in the Lower City. Along with doing this, I realigned some of the roads so that the grid was closer to its real shape. Any block that looks a little large i check out to see if there are plazas, parks, or laneways going through the area.

Today I added in fairway, hole, and green info to Chedoke Golf Course’s two golf courses. The main reason being was that it takes up a huge area of the city so it looks kinda weird without much inside of it.

Most of the large changes I think have been made, but there is still a bunch of work to be done to make OSM the best map for Hamilton.

Updated Imagery and Adding Golf Courses

Posted by Kevo on 4 December 2013 in English.

Over the last two or so weeks I’ve been on and off for edits, but two things seem to be occupying my time lately.

Updates with New Imagery

Updating new areas in Burlington and Hamilton, Ontario with the new Bing imagery that was recently added. It appears to be 20-30cm resolution and was taken Spring 2013, but the looks of the progress on some projects I am familiar with.

It looks like Bing went a little wild with their unsharp mask they applied (it can be easily noticed at the edge of tree canopies), but overall the imagery is of high quality and great for editing with.

Golf Courses

After reading a MapBox blog post about the outdoors map they are creating and some examples of golf courses being rendered, I decided to try my hand.

I managed to add one in a morning (Millcroft G&C.C.) and over a couple of edits I added Lakeview G&CC in Mississauga.

I think they turned out quite well and can’t wait to see them in MapBox’s final rendered product!

That’s it for now on my first diary post in 5 years. Maybe I’ll do them a bit more often…

The Orchard

Posted by Kevo on 30 July 2008 in English.

Just finished the Orchard neighbourhood of Burlington. Only a couple of streets missing plus paths; however, the map of this area is the most-up-to-date and complete map of this neighbourhood on the Internet besides official City of Burlington maps (see transit maps), it is even more complete than the Google, Yahoo, and MSN (Live) sets. I hope to add in a majority of the paths that go through the neighbourhood soon too before I'm away from home. Also, I'd like to add in as many parks as possible in the 4 northern neighbourhoods: Millcroft, Headon, Tyandaga, and the Orchard.

Millcroft is complete as is Headon Forest neighbourhoods and I'm still working on Tyandaga. I'm doing a bit of the Thomas Alton neighbourhood too with the GPS to try and get some of that completed.

I'll also be cleaning up the streets I've drawn soon to make the corners a bit smoother.

Complete:
-Streets of Headon, Millcroft, Orchard.
To Do:
-Finish Tyandaga;
-Orchard paths.
Working On:
-Alton neighbourhood;
-Parks + other trinkets you'd find at the side of the road;
-Giving regional roads for all of Halton proper reference numbers.
