Time wasted?

Posted by MrLemonCherry on 15 August 2010 in English.

Today I spent a couple of hours wandering around on a beautiful day, with nearly a hundred waypoints recorded , using both audio and photo.

Then of course I come home to JOSM, load my data and find that nothing lines up to the current data. How are you supposed to know how accurate the previous data is?

I try to add an accuracy tag to my data, so at least if I go out again and get a better accuracy I can replace my nodes.

Pity not everyone does, it could make life alot easier.

After 3 days of mapping and working in JOSM I've finally finished my first shopping area.

The main area of Stewarton, East Ayrshire (not Renfrewshire as Nominatim has it recorded) was almost empty, despite there being a registered mapper there.

I've added in every shop, with the use of many unofficial tags from the proposed section. It's amazing how few actually render.

It took a lot of work in JOSM to place the nodes. The error from a few feet of accuracy in the GPS signal was giving units on the wrong side of roads.

Now if I can just get used to the distance I need to place nodes form the route lines in JOSM I could get a decent looking street.

A good week for mapping.

It's the Easter Holidays and the weather's been great. Obviously that means family day trips. On Saturday and Sunday it was Irvine Beach Park, on Monday Troon South Beach and Tuesday Dean Castle Country Park, Kilmarnock.

With my family playing on the sand my legs and GPS got some much needed exercise. The GPS even needed new batteries with all of the work.

Every bench, waste bin, toilet and set of steps has been logged. Now if only they could actually render. Even the castle at the Dean Castle Country Park doesn't appear in the renderer!

Sadly a lot of the data from the Dean Park was unusable. Being a Country Park there are a lot of trees, which scatter the GPS signal very effectively. It's difficult to get a good track when the accuracy jumps randomly from 9-101 feet.

Not bad for PR though. One gent out walking his dog was interested enough to ask so got a brief summary of the project. He liked the idea that the Park would actually appear on the map instead of the current blank space. If only the renderer approved too.

I even passed a family who I heard comment "There's that man from Troon yesterday, with his yellow thing!" The "yellow thing" is my Garmin GPS 60 before anyone gets any strange ideas :) It's nice to know that I do stick out a bit while mapping, but you sure do get some odd looks.

Oh well, one day of the holidays left that isn't set for an indoor activity. Where can I map next?
