Unfortunately, OSM community may dislike at times - Proposal Process

Don’t take it personal – we all make mistakes and that criticism was about the proposal, not you. But, looking at your history, you’ve been mapping just for 2 months and you’re already coming up with proposals – that’s bold!

The OSM Iceberg

Good one!:)

Mapping under the trees

Wow, this one covers almost the entire US! I’ve been using LIDAR from MassGIS – it was extremely helpful for mapping smaller rivers and streams.

Quick and Easy Surveying with a GoPro MAX 360° Camera

I was using the same camera to take images when biking (mounted the camera on the helmet; still need to upload the images). I was wondering which camera orientation is better – front-back, or left-right – any feedback on that? I see that you use left-right…

Santa Cruz County AZ GIS

No need for permission if the imported data is distributed under a OSM-compatible license; otherwise, an explicit permission is needed.

.

I didn’t remember about it. Thank you, Approksimator! The list of sponsors was especially interesting

РЕСПУБЛИКА КРЫМ ЭТО РОССИЙСКАЯ ТЕРРИТОРИЯ!!!СRIMEA ITS RUSSIAN TERRITORY!!!

Русский корабль, ты знаешь, куда идти;)

Do NOT edit the map of Ukraine until the end of war!

The criminal code of Ukraine is mentioned as an illustration of why such a request is justified, but the request is by no means based on this criminal code.

Why WOMEN are pushing for a safe and inclusive space in OSM

Looks like males and females are editing OSM in pretty similar ways, so it is not obvious that the gender bias transforms into the bias of what/how objects are mapped. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10708-019-10035-z

Thoughts on the "Call to Take Action and Confront Systemic Offensive Behavior in the OSM Community"

Please, consider me an individual “who showed an interest in the topics without endorsing the Call”

A Call to Take Action and Confront Systemic Offensive Behaviour in the OSM Community. (Updated)

The lack of diversity does NOT prove discrimination.

A simple mechanism that could explain the gender bias without any discrimination inside the OSM: “OSM is more likely be of interest to a tech-educated person than to an average person + males are more likely to major in tech-related fields than females => males are more likely to participate in OSM than females”.

So, the gender bias in OSM can be just a reflection of a gender bias in majors and the female quotas for OSMF board will not address this general educational problem.

I’m not saying that there is no discrimination in OSM, just that to claim that it is there one needs something more conclusive than gender bias.

Sorry / Bad choice of words

Country of origin, race and gender of OSM contributors are not observable – can there exist discrimination based on unobservable characteristics?

Big problem in Bamako with a user mapping with Maps.Me

Maps.me doesn’t need to implement a messaging system, it is just another editor (just like JOSM, iD, Merkaartor, OsmAnd, etc.).

If a person edits OSM then it means that this person has an OSM-account and receives messages that anyone sends to her/his account.

Another idea for future imports of buildings

Exactly, Alan!:) The idea emerged when I was importing buildings in Fremont, CA – it was taking a while to find all buildings in neighborhoods that have the same orientation to apply “Q” (as in JOSM) to them. And then I realized that the clustering technique could do it for me.

A couple of ideas on how to improve quality/speed of buildings import (on the example of Fremont, CA)

For #1, in general I agree with you, but in this case (Fremont CA) when opening both layers (MS and Fremont municipal layer) in JOSM, I can see that MS is aligned fine with Bing imagery (which, in turn, is aligned fine with available GPS tracks), while the municipal layer is slightly shifted – and the shift is different for different blocks. Recently I draw buildings in Berkeley, CA and encountered the same issue – municipal layer was with slight shifts, while MS on average was well centered (though, of poorer details and sometimes slightly rotated relative to the image). Anyways, I’ll try #1 to see if it helps to decrease the shift – if the results are good enough, I’ll post them here:)

San Francisco data imports, anyone?

Greetings!

Please, find a link to an archive with my code, inputs and resulting “open_in_JOSM_and_upload.osm”-file below: https://drive.google.com/file/d/14ECmeyQN8HMrITfcsa3Nw3BfAv8Fi687/view?usp=sharing

Despite the name of the resulting file – “open_in_JOSM_and_upload.osm” – this file has attribute [upload=’never’] which should prevent accidental upload of it. But, just in case, let me make it explicit: THE FILE “open_in_JOSM_and_upload.osm” IS PRODUCED ONLY FOR REVIEW BY OSM COMMUNITY, IT MAY CONTAIN SERIOUS ERRORS, PLEASE, DO NOT UPLOAD IT!

The archive also includes a README .pdf-file that describes in simple language my approach to matching address points with OSM buildings.

The script file, “import_sf_addresses.py”, should run in a standalone mode (like “python3 import_sf_addresses.py”) if you have all required libraries installed, but I ran it step-by-step.

Should you have any questions, I’d be happy to reply. Looking forward to receiving your feedback!

With kind regards,
