backpacking philippines's Diary

Recent diary entries

I'm going to a baptism of a friend's daughter on saturday somewhere in paranaque and peeked in advance in OSM to compare the map furnished to me.

the roads were correct but some road names do not match. my friend's map was hand-drawn, not to scale but bear some names absent in OSM.

I've been to her residence two years ago when I got lost due to a wrong turn on France rather than on Russia and blamed the previous map given to me

this time would be easier since my friend took note of the inaccurate map comment thus the new one :P

but this time, I have OSM on my side, no problem going to the resort as I've added it already thru BING but I can't find Mary Immaculate Parish there :(

I went to San Mateo for a free trip to Timberland Heights on the mountains of San Mateo and passed by Commonwealth avenue and batasan (no routing errors here) as timberland is well mapped (except wrong name and road should be private)

only noticed missing u-turn slots on commonwealth between Tandang Sora and Batasan, about 4 or 5 of them while some are misplaced. These can potentially route incorrectly if you're going to some roads between the two points.

how was i able to spot them errors? It's just whenever I see u-turn slots, I glance at my Nuvie to see if it's there, most of the time, they're not there on the stretch I mentioned.

only the slots from UP to circle is correctly mapped (as i also frequent the place en route to/from Katipunan)

i downloaded the demo map of RG to look at camnorte but also noticed road data on paete. I was surprised at the detail of roads present on RG unlike the earlier demo version.

just my thought:

how can RG get a map of paete with street names? not that i mind but street signs in paete are a rarity unless you're a knowledgeable local (most locals don't know the street names but remember landmarks). No accurate map of paete can be found online except OSM and Google maps is still too full of errors.

anyway, lots of errors in tagging there as most streets are too narrow plus Manila East Road is mislabeled in RG (part of the old RG version, it should be J.P. Rizal Street). The Quinale Street there is also erroneous, forgot to correct it yet the error is also present on RG. what gives? :P

anyway, it benefits my hometown :P

with only the towns of Famy and Sta. Maria needing updates on their town centers, I think it's really Laguna with most detail for all provinces...unless of course i wasn't able to scrutinize the others.

I say Best mapped but not really complete...lots of work to do to improve present data as well as POIs, POIs and POIs. I'm trying to recruit other locals to join the fun to update and edit

kudos to all OSM PH mappers and thanks to Bing for the hi-res imagery. hope you include Famy, Sta. Maria and Siniloan towns in the next satellite image update :P

last weekend, i went to PICC and passed by bonifacio drive, blumentritt, avenida then back via espana. only noticed a few minor tweaks

already corrected the routing in sta cruz going to lawton and it's now flawless with the proper roads prioritized plus the one-way roads. Note I can't make routing avoid the intersection of recto and avenida due to heavy traffic there but making a turn to Mapua St, OSM will show you the correct alternate route.

there are missing u-turn slots on bonifacio and quezon avenue though that i will add later, i can't now since i disabled Flash on my browser as it's making my Firefox 4 crash (even my old firefox 3.6)

also noticed Mabuhay Rotonda is now a roundabout again but there seems to be a no-through traffic from Mayon or E. Rodriguez that makes it only for u-turn purpose. have to confirm it later though it's not my regular route so it may take time.

my first day of my 2D/1N trip to davao city, probably my 4th in this southern city

davao city's fairly mapped with streets i passed by todaw but noticed several errors when i tried to route to my destination along jp. laurel

as with most routing errors i encounter, it's a single carriageway mapped as dual-carriageway (or the other way around)

JP laurel for one, davao's main artery from the airport is one (the center island is only present near the interchange and in the vicinity of victory mall). there are some more i noticed that needs to be converted to single-carriageway...will just tag them in openstreetbugs later

most of the ways here are tagged secondary but i observed should only be residential or minor, tertiary at most...

was editing parts of Cainta, adding roads from Bing and upgrading roads to effect proper routing when the dreaded error appeared (blank screen with the exclamation mark on Potlatch 2)...

I wasn't able to save, hitting S didnt' work, as i've pretty much traced mostly residential roads plus some major roads around countryside, midtown subdivisions et al...

just call it a day...i'll redo if i find myself not feeling lazy :(

i'm going there to cainta again tonight for a friend's birthday and will just obeserve missing roads on OSM

added several traffic signals at madison and mckinley and several POIs on ortigas

note the crossing of Xavier and Roosevelt needs to be checked if really present, I don't remember having them there (it has an effect on routing, again)...

note the missing U-turn slots, one is underneath the Ortigas flyover, routing errors again.

also, a no right turn at the corner of Wilson, you're required to use the service road, it's not mapped correctly, ive yet to use it, that's why i don't have traces.

Vigan, Ilocos Sur

Posted by backpacking philippines on 21 February 2011 in English.

finished another installment of the heritage town of Vigan. Added new roads, POIs including the hidden garden in Bulala near the airport. Intentionally passed by unmapped roads just to gather tracks.

this city used to be just a three road map, something unusual in OSM for a supposedly tourist area...

the basic road network can be completed once hi-resolution imagery from Bing is available so keep your fingers crossed.

note that many roads in Vigan are one-way from 7am to 7pm but I did not tag them as one way so be careful.

Luna, La Union

Posted by backpacking philippines on 21 February 2011 in English.

added the main link from Bangar to Luna town. passed by the town, from vigan, in search of the Luna watchtower that i found in ruins and a tree growth inside the old brick spanish watchtower. added our lady of namacpacan church and the monument of Antonio Luna

I never knew Bing existed in the area...at least the main road link is there. hoping for updates to Ilocos Sur and Vigan so I can complete the map.

Puerto Princesa, Palawan

Posted by backpacking philippines on 21 February 2011 in English.

visited Palawan just yesterday and OSM was a surprise. I only noticed minor bugs including the new south road that go to Iwahig (it's tagged in OSM as Provincial Road when street signs say it's National Highway (again)) and tag the old road as no_access. I will add missing traffic signals and a turn restriction. the intersection go fernandez and rizal avenue haave about 50 meters of center island but it won't affect routing since there are no other roads, unless you're going to the establishments near the corner

even the private subdivision I stayed at is mapped correctly. the part of Brgy Kamuning need update...the islands of Honda Bay need to be renamed to local names as how the locals call the islands...

the road network is about complete, only the POIs need to be updated...even the monkey trail, the trek from Sabang to the underground river entrance, is in OSM, nice work!

will add my few updates later

i browsed my favorite haunt Quiapo and noticed several streets there with glaring orange colors, many of them are the narrow streets that can even be tagged service roads or living streets due to being almost impassable.

added the missing link from evangelista to recto (back of isetann)...not yet sure but i think it's also a one-way street but will verify, only added the traffic lights (evangelista is the street with lots of stores selling generators, pumps et al...it's also where the quiapo-divisoria-north harbor jeeps pass and usually too crowded, don't pass there unless you're going to the inner streets of quiapo)

also noticed inconsistencies for nearby sta. cruz and binondo areas...
will rationalize them later

since i've fixed routing from roosevelt munoz to makati, looking beyond my home turf and usual route for possible errors. i usually find routing errors from dual-carriage roads with missing crossings and u-turn slots. last time i found them on the short stretch of Samsom road and McArthur highway (still uncorrected)

this time I noticed Congressional avenue has missing slots too. I already added the missing road link to cagayan with a traffic light (with a possible turn restriction but i've yet to add pending verification) but there's one missing u-turm slot used by Proj 8 jeeps to get to Shorthorn. will look for it the next time i go to Holy Cross in Novaliches or probably peek into Bing to reveal it for the slot usually has a jam of vehicles waiting to make the u-turn

i've been reviewing the map of my home province and it seems only the town centers of Famy and Sta Maria are not mapped. all the others are present thanks now to Bing that provided hi-res imagery. Sta. maria needs lots of clean ups too but there's no Bing imagery there as well as Siniloan and Famy.

I've been to Sta Maria twice. the second time i tried to find the alleged old stone church there only to be dismayed at a new structure, so much for false reports or outdated online info.

i'll start looking for other Laguna locals to help in making Laguna the most mapped province of OSM PH :P

i remember i added those u-turn slots on EDSA months ago...i only noticed they're missing the other day when I try to route from trinoma to makati and my garmin's directing me to use the u-turn slot about 500 meters down the road instead of the nearer one near MRT north edsa terminal.

there's a missing u-turn slot from southbound to northbound that i use when I go to bago bantay (my alternate route to SM)

the u-turn slot northbound to southbound in front of trinoma just beside the other u-turn slot

the u-turn slot (two-way) a few meters from trinoma access road 9that meets mindanao ave)

the u-turn slot (two way) that I use to get home from philam homes to trinoma/sm/munoz

these missing slots mess up routing in the area, and a major one at that

how did those U-turn slots disappear? were my previous edits deleted or ignored?

one year of mapping

Posted by backpacking philippines on 7 February 2011 in English.

my Garmin Nuvi warned me this morning that my US map was not updated for more than a year...it's not that i need to update it but i don't have a need to.

it just dawned on me that it's been with me for a year already, when i requested an online friend to buy it for me online then hand-carried it. we met at jollibee west ave a few days later...a kababayan retiree of mine who i've never really met (who also bought me an OBD 2 scanner for my car)

now what have i accomplished with my GPS? so far only a few POIs, even Munoz area where I live lacks the POIs except the banks (i'm from the banking industry that's why i always notice lacking banks and ATMs) and major restaurants. I realized i've yet to add lots of POIs in my home turf but i don't know how to tag them properly for I'm too lazy to look around again for some kind of OSM cheat sheet on how to properly tag POIs like pawnshops and LBC branches

i walked along roosevelt yesterday to observe and will update my area, it's nice that with Potlatch 2, I can just drag and drop them but if i don't know the proper tag, i simply ignore...lazy researcher or even ask questions :(

but at least, my focus on routing is reaping its benefits...found and corrected routing errors in QC, makati, manila, pasig, mandaluyong, malabon, san juan and cainta and almost impeccable now should wifey get lost again in these places

discovered another error while browsing the map near monumento and malabon zoo. this time it's in Caloocan, Malabon, Valenzuela. the segment of MacArthur is a dual carriageway i.e. it should have a center island. no idea of the other end since I'm only familiar with it from Mento up to marulas...in bulacan it's already a two-way, single carriageway road...

expect routing errors in the area as not all streets have crossings

Mapping Pagsanjan, Laguna

Posted by backpacking philippines on 1 February 2011 in English.

as a backpacking and tourism advocate, one of the very frustrating things is not being able to find reliable maps of tourist places...one of them is Pagsanjan (not for me though for I have a working knowledge of the area since it's very near my hometown)

I frequent this town, not for the famous waterfall, but for the hospital where my Nanay Sugar always get confined, to buy medicine at the nearby Mercury Drug and to get cash from the quite new BDO ATM.

already added major resorts (two more missing) and will add restaurants and spas when I get the exact location. Can't see them from the high-res Bing image, unlike the resorts that are highly distinguishable from the "eye in the sky"

Twice I tried to find the ancestral home of the Ejercitos but failed, for I was too lazy to ask around, and just drove by. I think I now know where it is, thanks to Bing so I'll just verify :P

there are also two branches of the famous Aling Taleng's Halo-halo...that I didn't like, btw, I'll add the other one later :(

now this is another edge of OSM over RG :P
