After a few months, I’ve finished Fair Lawn. I started adding parking spaces with parking_space = disabled where applicable, as I’ve realized that this is something important I should’ve been doing earlier as well.

Next, I will be mapping Glen Rock, which is just to the north of Fair Lawn.

It’s been exactly one month since finishing Fort Lee, and I’ve just finished Cliffside Park, the most densely populated municipality in Bergen County (seventh highest population density nationwide). Cliffside Park lies on the border with Hudson County, which has four of the six places higher in population density than Cliffside Park.

Cliffside Park is rather small in area, which is why it only took me a month to finish mapping the area. The next place, Fair Lawn, is not so small, so it may take a bit longer.

After not much time-roughly a month and a half-I have finished editing Fort Lee for now. In the last diary entry, I predicted that Fort Lee would take longer than North Arlington, but it seems like I was incorrect then. As a result of the current situation, I’ve been able to pick up the pace I used to have with areas such as Paramus when it comes to editing.

Fort Lee is on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge. With all buildings in Fort Lee having been added to OpenStreetMap, this means that there is now an expanse of land stretching from New York all the way to around Paramus where all buildings have been mapped.

Next up is Cliffside Park. It’s the most densely populated area in Bergen County, the fifth-most densely populated area in New Jersey, and seventh-most densely populated incorporated place nationwide.

In just over two months, I have finished my edits in North Arlington now, with every building mapped! This one was way quicker than the last OSM project I gave myself, Teaneck.

North Arlington is relatively small, which is partly why it didn’t take so long to map. It’s the southernmost location in Bergen County, and borders two other New Jersey counties: Essex and Hudson.

Next is Fort Lee. It has roughly the same land area as North Arlington (just 0.02 square miles less), but unlike North Arlington, it doesn’t have a large cemetery, so it may take a bit longer to map Fort Lee.

It took a really long time, but I’m finally done editing the map around Teaneck for now! There were many periods of inactivity, but today I’ve finally finished.

The amount of time that Teaneck took to map is really long, and I feel that this has something to do with not only its geographic size but also its population. Teaneck is the second most populous municipality in Bergen County, with neighboring Hackensack being the most populous.

Next up is North Arlington, and after that will be Fort Lee. I hope that North Arlington will be way quicker to complete.

After a lot of breaks in between and a few months, I’ve finally finished mapping Emerson! It took quite some time, but it’s finally done. At first, I was working pretty slow, but I started making more progress towards the end of April.

Something I found pretty interesting about Emerson is the small amount of businesses there. I might go add names to all the businesses in Emerson because there’s such a small amount of them.

Anyway, the next place I’ll map is Teaneck. It’s quite large in area compared to many other places in Bergen County, and has the second highest population.

I just finished Oradell! This took quite some time (over a month), with a few breaks in between. I finished the western portion pretty quickly, but the portion east of the Hackensack River was not completed at as fast of a pace for some reason.

One noticeable change I made around Oradell was adding on to the Hackensack River, which for whatever reason was incomplete on the map. Now, one could actually tell that Van Buskirk Island County Park is actually an island, and see 4 other islands that are just appear to be woods on the map.

I may come back to Oradell to add businesses; I would first do them in Hackensack though.

Next comes Emerson.

I just finished mapping Woodcliff Lake! Up next will be Oradell, which will be the tenth large place in Bergen County that I am going to be mapping! (Large doesn’t include Teterboro or Rockleigh, just so you know.)

Woodcliff Lake is not very dense, which I don’t really like to see. However, the area makes up for it-the lake itself is pretty great. The area really reminds me of Fairfield County, Connecticut-it’s not too dense, there’s lot of trees, and there’s a lot of similarities between houses in Woodcliff Lake and Fairfield County.

It took me slightly less than 2 weeks to finish mapping Woodcliff Lake, which is actually better than I expected. I hope I can continue to work at such a fast pace!

I’ll be starting Oradell tomorrow, and then will be Emerson. Not even one month into the year I am already on the 11th incorporated place!

I just finished mapping Rochelle Park for 800 edits! This is a nice little milestone for me. I have mapped 10 incorporated places entirely in Bergen County so far, so I now have finished 1/7 of all places in Bergen County!

Rochelle Park is a neighbor of two places I have already mapped-Paramus and Maywood-and it looks pretty good to see these three next to each other completely mapped. Even better, Hackensack and River Edge are also bordering either Paramus or Maywood (Hackensack borders both), so it’s five cities/townships/boroughs completely mapped right next to each other!

At first, I thought Rochelle Park might be pretty time-consuming to map, but it turned out being quicker than Maywood. It’s only been 11 days since I started!

Anyway, next is Woodcliff Lake, and after that should be Oradell. I can’t wait to start Woodcliff Lake tomorrow!

Mapping Rochelle Park felt like a great way to start off my mapping in 2019, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has for me!

An early happy new year to everyone!

I’m not even 6 months into mapping and I’ve already finished 7 municipalities of Bergen County. This year was great, and I plan to continue with contributing next year.

I’ve just finished Maywood after a time period of slightly over 2 weeks. Next should come Rochelle Park, and after that I might start Woodcliff Lake.

I noticed that there is a lot of industrial land in Maywood’s western portions, and that the are south of Central Avenue is very dense. Meanwhile, the northern area seems to be less dense and the eastern area is almost entirely residential. I’d say the west and south areas are like Hackensack, while the others are a bit more like the less populated places in the area.

Additionally, mapping Memorial Park made me realize how large the park actually is, and the park seems to have a lot. It shares the Memorial name with the nearby Memorial Elementary School, one of two schools in Maywood along with the one on Maywood Avenue.

Also, I’ve made it to over 750 changesets this year, and lots of map changes! I’ll almost certainly reach 800 while mapping Rochelle Park.

It’s been a short time of 16 days since I finished editing Hackensack, and I’ve already finished Leonia! Not quite as fast as I was hoping (Palisades Park took around half as many days), but still pretty good in my eyes.

I don’t know much about Leonia, but to me it seems like a less dense extension of Palisades Park. It still is pretty dense, but not quite as dense as Palisades Park which has around 4 times more people per square mile.

Next up is Maywood, which borders two places I’ve already mapped: Hackensack and Paramus. Maywood is pretty small and somewhat dense, and that’s what I like when mapping!

I’m almost at 700 edits, and I’m hoping to reach that milestone very soon while mapping Maywood.

I’m at 6 out of 70 places in Bergen County done, and it’s only been slightly less than 6 months. I’ve covered 11% of the county’s land area, which I’d say is pretty good!

I’ve just finished mapping Hackensack today, the most populous city in Bergen County. No place has taken a longer time so far except for Paramus, which has more than twice the land area.

A few parks were missing, but I found them through hackensack.org/recreation. I noticed how a lot of the parks were named after a street that passes right by them, which I found to be somewhat interesting.

While mapping Hackensack, I made it to 600 edits. I had made a lot of edits in Hackensack!

Hackensack is an example of what I like to see in a city. There’s great diversity when it comes to neighborhoods. There’s a downtown that’s one of my favorites, right next to some pretty nice residential areas.

I don’t know what I will do next. I will start editing in other countries now, but my mapping in Bergen County will still be my priority!

I’m now done with Palisades Park, the next place in Bergen County I was planning to do. It went by so quickly! Only eight days of mapping and I’m done. I added more than a thousand buildings, changed a bit up with schools, and more!

One thing that’s interesting is how there were no parks other than Overpeck County Park that were already on the map.

I have really loved Palisades Park for quite a lot of time. High population density, for example, is one of the things I love to see. At over 16 thousand people a square mile, all boredom is immediately released! At night, the lights in the apartments just give a great feel overall. Palisades Park just gives me a vibe I can’t explain very well, but it’s a good one.

Next up is Hackensack. After that, I will probably start editing other countries.

Also, I have reached 500 edits yesterday while doing a bit of edits in Jersey City! I was planning to finish Palisades Park for 500, but decided it would be fine.

It was very fun to map Palisades Park. I’m ready to see what Hackensack has for me!

I just finished mapping River Edge today! It was pretty quick compared to Paramus and Alpine, Alpine being 5x larger by area and Paramus 8x.

While mapping River Edge, I also decided to go finish mapping Teterboro, which was already practically done. A few buildings, areas, and airport grass were some of the things I added there.

Next up is Palisades Park. I chose Palisades Park because of two reasons: density and memories.

I will probably do Hackensack next. After that, I probably will start mapping in more countries than just the United States. I’m really looking forward to that!

I’m also pretty happy with my ranking on HDYC-currently 14 in the United States. Additionally, I hit 400 edits a few days ago! I’m making a lot of edits real quickly, and this will hopefully continue. Look at Bergen County now, and you can see the improvement on the map.

After finishing mapping a lot of Paramus, I decided to map Alpine. While I didn’t really consistently map Alpine and instead mapped a lot of other random areas in Bergen County during this time period, today I decided to seriously revisit Alpine and finished mapping it.

It was way easier than Paramus, mostly because there is a lower population density and a lower area, hence less building to map. However, as Alpine is one of (if not the most) expensive places to live in within the entire United States, every building required way more nodes than usual to place them on the map.

A lot of my edits outside Alpine were in Hackensack. Downtown Hackensack has a lot of buildings and a lot of parking spaces. I’m going to map Hackensack very soon.

Next up is going to be River Edge, and then Palisades Park. I really love Palisades Park and every time I go there I feel great. Meanwhile, River Edge has a great public library, and something just makes Kinderkamack Road very lovable.

On OSM, Bergen County is improving quickly. At this rate, I don’t see much, if anything stopping me from going on for at least another month.

I started mapping less than two months ago, with intent to improve the map where I live, Bergen County. I started with Paramus, and I’m now done! Basically every building, residential areas, parking lots, paths… I’ve mapped a lot. I took a little break from Paramus to do the tiny Rockleigh borough, but then returned back to Paramus.

I’m very happy with my edits and #24 for US edits on HDYC. That’s way better than I expected, honestly.

Next is Alpine, and I’m excited to map Alpine. Most of my changes have so far been, and will be buildings, as those are barely marked throughout Bergen County.

I would love to see Bergen County as one of the best openly-mapped areas in the world one day.
