Mapping for Algeria - Data Broken Loops / Gaps

Algeria is still has light maps, while writing this it was less then 40MB (Compressed Binary in Osmand).

I don’t think individuals nor public/private sector organizations can build high quality map that reflect reality on the ground with separate efforts. Mapping requires effort, time and equipment. It is a very long term project and never done. It requires continuous updates and maintenance.

What’s really needed is more Geographic “Open Data” and more focus on Open Technologies in education. Why?

To fix these:

Missing roads and broken imagery alignment

What’s needed: GPS traces

Who can provide it with minimum effort:

  • All communication businesses.
  • All servicing.
  • All transport, distribution & delivery businesses.
  • All emergency, safety and security departments.
Broken Address Book (geocode / reverse-geocode)

What’s needed: Street and Residence Addresses

Who can provide it with some effort (to point it on map):

  • Postal services
  • Water distribution service
  • Electricity & Gas distribution service
  • Telecom providers
  • Administrations
  • Civil Protection and Medical Emergency
Zipcode Storm

Zip-codes are in a mess. Previously, they were based on administrative divisions. Around 7 years ago, they were changed to be based on nearest post office service point. People still using old codes :D.

`AABBB`: `AA` Wilaya/District ID number, `BBB` is post office number in that Wilaya/District.

Software:

  • Android main: Osmand+, SatStat, GPSTest.

    OSMTracker, GPX Viewer

    (Osmand got such feature),

StreetComplete

(No coverage area)

Mozilla Stumbler

(Battery saving, it will be more useful if they share coverage maps for emergency use)

CosyDVR

(Battery draining, not current with OS updates)

Hardware:

  • Cell Phone, still more affordable with few accessories (power bank or car charger)
  • GPS recorder

Quiet expensive $300 (as 2021) in Algeria for basic eTrex10!, Tested an old one, and it is very slow compared to current phones GPS technology.
