In the field I use a Garmin Oregon 700 (which replaced the 400t model and an earlier Greko) and different cameras for photo mapping. I usually try to improve bicycle routing (including corresponding infrastructure like ice cream parlors) as well as hiking paths. I also contributed to Humanitarian OpenStreetMap tasks.
The different profiles of my Oregon are currently set up to display different routable maps like these:
- Freizeitkarte
- OpenTopoMap
- RadReiseKarte (now defunct)
- Johannes Formann’s cycle map (now defunct)
All of these osm based maps have some nice features that work well (or even great!) for walking/hiking and cycling as well as driving a car.
I recommend Organic Maps on your Android or iOS smartphone as a replacement for map data from Google or Apple.
