Hi, I don't think Bidar is spelled as "Bidara". https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/245642463/ Website - http://bidar.nic.in/ Wiki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bidar

Hi. The name on the map (name tag) is Bidar. At one time I was adding Kannada names, and auto transliterating these into Latin letters. Whether the KN name should be ಬೀದರ or ಬೀದರ್, Bidara or Bidar is arguable; the wikipedia page gives the first, the district page has nothing in KN that I can see.

Hi. I don't speak Kannada and thus don't know which one is right. I was actually talking about the name:en tag (I should have mentioned it in the first comment!).
OSM is rendering name tag, but others like OpenMapTiles.org are rendering name:en tag. Well, it's opto them to render whatever they want.
Maybe, let's ask about Bidara/Bidar (in English and Kannada) in the forum or on the mailing list. Someone from Karnataka would reply?

I'm confident that the Kn name is normally ಬೀದರ Bidara, but I agree that it is most often written Bidar in Latin letters. As I said, I was transliterating the names at one time, but I don't think I was consistent whether I used name or name:kn. The current name could be replaced. As to asking in the forum, it will probably direct us to wikidata / wikipedia.

Hey, how do you translate? Do you use any JOSM plugins? It would be very helpful for me translating names in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to Telugu!

Hi; the problem will be that the pronunciation of 'English' (latin) writing is poorly defined, especially in regard to India where every Indian and English speaker can pick how they write any name. So it can be difficult to deduce how something is pronounced in Telugu, Kannada et.c. You might be able to deduce it, but only based on your personal knowledge of the Indian language, it is difficult to get software to do it. The only way I can think of would be with a database of place names in Telugu. However going from a name in any Indian script to latin is simple, though there are often choices to be made as to how they could be written.
So what I actually do is determine the Kannada name, generally by looking it up on state government websites, and checking it on other maps (the ECI website and maps can be useful). Occasionally there are variations in the Kannada name to worry about. Then I transliterate the Kannada names into latin letters, using the 'simple transliteration' rule described here -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_%28Indic%29#Simplified_transliteration . This will give Bengaluru, Bidara, et.c. from the Kannada originals.I've written some transliteration software to do this. It is for Kannada, you would need to adapt this for Telugu, and you would need to have a knowledge of Python 3 programming and of Sqlite. It is not a josm plugin. It can interact somewhat with josm, but not in a simple manner, though I always use it with josm. Better integration should be possible but I've not got to that state yet. Let me know if you are interested and I'll send it to you.

Hi. I speak Telugu. I am pretty sure I know how 99.9% names are written from English to Telugu (except the rarest of the rarest). Yes, please share the software. I am a PHP developer, but can understand Python. I'd love to see how it would be useful for me! You can send an email to thallasrihari at gmail. Thanks ;)
