I notice that this large changeset removes the "drinkable=yes" tag from e.g. http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/966339776/history . Was this change discussed anywhere so that anyone previously rendering "drinkable=yes" on a map would no to update it before this change was made?

Also, the changeset comment "water" really isn't very descriptive. Much more helpful would have been something like "mechanical editing all amenity=drinking_water to remove any drinkable=yes tags".

Was there any reaction on your questions ? Why wasn't this changeset reverted ?

Maybe place a note for Polyglot. That is his territory.

@FrViPofm - can you think of a good reason why this should _not_ be reverted?

@FrViPofm Yes, it looks like a mechanical edit that removes tags added by other mappers.

I think that SomeoneElse deserves a good explanation.

"looks like" but may not be...
----------
For one who read the doc (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/drinking_water#Current_situation) they were 3384 drinkable=* at 2014-04-15. This changeset made 318 changes. Les that 10%. A mechanical edit on less than a tenth ?A good reason ?
----------
1. It exists, and the wold is not as if it had never existed.2. See the proposals and talk pages.
* http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/drinkable
* http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/drinking_waterdiscussed nowhere ?
----------
Rudolf (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Rudolf) leaded the discussion on the 2 proposals. They were votes and so on... 6 month before this changesetrendering "drinkable=yes" ?
----------
I've never heard anybody but me, (project for the website "Randonner léger") using those tags.Who today is hurted two and half years later than on a tenth of occurrences of a value, for a tag that was said deprecated by its promoter himself three years ago
not very descriptive ?
----------
I'm not talkative. It' said, among monks, that we have two eyes, two hears and hopefully one mouth, so we must see and hear rather than talk.SomeoneElse deserves a good explanation
----------
Not me ?
I must say that I don't understand the aim of the discussion. Is the map less consistent ? Is someone hurt ? I've still heard no good reason. -

I'm sorry but you still haven't explained exactly _what_ you have changed or _why_ you changed it. For example, why did you change http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/942584694/history but not, say, https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/1261454510 ? Assuming that you haven't visited all of these places to survey them yourself or have other knowledge of them where did you discuss your proposed mechanical edit?
The answer to " Is someone hurt ?" is "we don't know" simply because we don't know everything that people use OSM data for. There have been mechanical edits which seemed (even to me) at the time to make sense but actually did not simply because I didn't understand how the tags were being used everywhere - that's why the mechanical edit policy has a requirement to discuss, so that problems can be found out before the change is made. Also, it gives anyone who is using the data of an "invalid tag" the chance to change.
Best Regards,
Andy -

I don't remember, it's more than 2 years ago... But I'm pretty sure I had enough knowledge on those nodes, with the tags themselves, according to the wiki. e.g. amenity=drinking_water implies drinking_water=yes. As junction=roundabout implies oneway=yes.
According to Rudolph mentions, they have been discussions on the German forum, on the tagging list, on the wiki about those tags. Difficult to be more verbose.
About this changeset, no discussion, as far as I remember. Because it is not mechanical. Yes I used to make big changeset, uploading at one a long time of work. In my profile, I have not too much changesets on my counter, however I was during a time in the top 10 contributors without a mechanical edit !
2½ years ! The guy has had the chance to change ! He has read the wiki and makes now a good use of good tags : now drinking_water=* > 41 000.
But they are still 1700 data (drinkable=*) unavailable for those having projects and reading the doc. A pity ! A mess !OK, enough talked. I'm tired.
Ciao.
