Removing the driveway tag from http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/41645258/history smacks a bit of "tagging for the renderer". Just because the "standard" map makes a complete horlicks of anything outside a town centre isn't a good reason to mistag things for it :)

For me, it's not (just) an access to a private property or business, and it's certainly not private as driveways often are. It may be a dead end for car drivers, but for walkers its a significant through route connecting to the footpath beyond - in the absence of service=driveway_and_footpath, it needs to be something else, be it a lane or an 'unspecified' service road.

Sounds like a similar issue to the one that I raised last year https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/765 .
I've pretty much given up on the "standard" style being useful for anything that I'd want to use it for. See also the examples here https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2015-July/073526.html
