I'd like to know the reasons for this edit. The area is dense in retail shops and it should be reflected on the map.

Sure! I left a message on some of your changesets and waited some time before proceeding, but apparently you didn't see it.
As far as I understand it, landuse tags describe the use of the land, it has more to do with management than to physical properties of the land (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Landuse).
Although it is true that there is a high density of shops, you have to take into account two things: there are even more houses, and, hence, its primary use is residential, not retail. In fact, the use of that area, as well as most of the areas within a city, are residential areas. Exceptions to that, may be industrial areas or military areas, where housing is not allowed there.

I have just realized that I forgot to add that landuse=retail should be used in specific retail areas such as shopping malls, but not in residential streets. For this particular scenario in which are many shops within a residential area it is far better to add each shop/amenity independently. If there are many, they will show up by itself.

Ok. I wasn't notified in any way of these comments in any way. Thanks for the clarification.
