Hi,
I came across your edits and noticed you have named footways as dirt and steepdirt>> etc. Please note the name tags are meant for adding proper names of the features. You can always use surface tag to describe what is the surface of the roads. I have deleted those name tags from the features. If you think dirt surface tag needs to be added, you can add that surface=* tag on OSM.
Best,

Right was looking for a way for trails to show steepness with the default Mapnik rederer. I understand your comments, just have not seen osm mapping data online where someone can see that a trail is steep. It can be in the data, I agree but no one is using a render that shows that. Please let me know of a resource if I am incorrect.

Hi,
I think there are tags for indicating steepness. It's either highway=steep or highway=incline. You can add those tags if you need to indicate the steepness of the trial. Incline=up/down also works.
