Hi poornibadrinath,
As can be seen from http://osm.mapki.com/history/node.php?id=234061921 this town has been through a number of name changes over the years!
I'm not convinced that having anglicised versions of Azerbaijani or Armenian names here makes sense. These were added in the previouse changeset http://osm.org/browse/changeset/47472163 by someone who appears to have wanted "names" to be anglicised, so they appeared on OSM's "standard" map in characters that they can read (it's difficult to tell for sure since they didn't reply to my questions). They also tended to favour Azerbaijani versions over Armenian ones, which might be incorrect here as it's on the "Nagorno-Karabakh Republic" side of the line of control according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aghdara_%28town%29 .
Adding some way of saying "this town is known as X but is also known as Y" certaining makes sense, but I'm not sure whether that's extra information to the already-existing language names.
Where did the request for the alt_name come from? If it was someone local perhaps they could help...
Best Regards,

Hi Andy,
When I came across this changeset and searched for the name Agdara, a wikipedia entry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aghdara_(town) had two names for the same place: Aghdara and Mertakert. That's why I added the alt name tag. Wasn't aware that this town was always referred to as Mertakert. Thanks for letting me know. I will revert my changeset and the previous one to how it was before. Thanks again.

Hi Poornima,
Thanks for your reply. I don't think that this town "was always referred to as Mertakert" - I suspect that it's official name will have varied depending on which side of the border it happened to be at the time. http://military.wikia.com/wiki/Operation_Goranboy suggests that it was captured and recaptured 3 times at least during the Nagorno-Karabakh war. The wiki article's not very detailed, but other media such as https://armenpress.am/eng/news/806045/martakertn-u-fransiayi-sarsel-qaxaqy-storagrel-en-hamagortsakcutyan.html suggest it's still very much within the Armenian sphere of influence, suggesting that version #24 is probably the best compromise on names - although I don't have much knowledge of the situation there. -

HI Andy,
Thanks for the clarification. I checked around to see if there are any other concrete sources but couldn't find any. I agree that may be the version 24 remains the best compromise on names. I will go ahead and change the name to how it was in your changeset.
Thanks again.
Best,
Poornima
