Hello,
Someone who was adding population numbers has just been blocked. So is this a way to circumvent being blocked, or are you a genuine new editor? Is the 2011 census data released under an open licence? Is there information about this?

Hi Chillly,
I had no idea that anyone had been blocked for adding population numbers. I was looking for ways to use OpenStreetMap for Parish Council and local political work, and was trying to find a way to display ward and district boundaries. While doing that I saw that there was no population data for Middleton Cheney (my village) and I'd seen it on the Wikipedia page and local District Council plan, so added it in, hoping that it might be useful.
2011 Census data can be access from Nomis: https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/
It states that the data is available for free, but I suspect that that means free as in beer rather than speech. There is a copyright notice: https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/home/copyright.asp
which states that "Under the terms of the Open Government Licence (OGL) and UK Government Licensing Framework (launched 30 September 2010), anyone wishing to use or re-use ONS material, whether commercially or privately, may do so freely without a specific application for a licence, subject to the conditions of the OGL and the Framework."
I got the figure the from the local plan Parish data for Middleton: http://www.southnorthants.gov.uk/Parish-Data-Middleton-Cheney.pdf
It also appears on the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middleton_Cheney
Kind regards,
Mark. -

Thanks for the reply. OGL is fine, but oddly wikipedia isn't always a safe source - we don't know where that came from. Your edit looks fine based on OGL.
The parish boundaries for much of GB have been added, it looks like your village has too. The purple dotted line show the boundary. This has usually come from the OS Opendata released since 2010.
What sort of use do you have in mind for the parish council? Do you need any help or advice? For example, you can display OSM on a village website.

I hadn't thought about displaying OSM on the village website but that's a really good idea.
What I was looking at was delivery of leaflets, newsletters and so on in the local area. I contested the 2017 County Council election and am looking to be a candidate for the 2019 District Council election and possibly the 2021 County Council election. Because of that, I was trying to get a clear idea of which addresses fell within both the Ward and the District. I also wanted to know if there was data on, or a way to estimate, the number of dwellings on a given street (for delivery numbers), and whether I could get useful printable maps in case I manage to press-gang some volunteers to make deliveries.
For the Parish Council it's similar things that I want: we're looking at implementing a 'Good Neighbour' plan to offer help and support to older or vulnerable people within the ward, many of whom probably aren't reachable through electronic communication and might not read Parish notices, so I was looking for things that might help with a leaflet campaign. -

The map is created by volunteers. It looks as though no one has put the hours in to draw the houses in your village. A quick look at the aerial imagery tells me they could be traced from there, but it's a long job and not your real intention.
Electoral ward boundaries are not in OSM. I don't think they have been released under a suitable licence - something we are very fussy about.
OSM maps can be printed and the data that makes them is freely downloadable (unlike any other map provider). Using the share icon on the right you can extract a small sample (village sized) as various formats for use in other software which might help you.
Hope that helps.
