Hi, I am an area mapper, wondering why this POI got flagged for removal of data for advertising? Aside from not having the leisure=tanning_salon tag, it seems like legitimate data, and doesn't have a lot of the "description" garbage like a lot of SEO spam does.

I am investigating a pattern where a SEO firm has created a single account for each of their clients, and used that account to add one POI only, and added that POI with a focus on getting the business name and website URL into OSM, without respecting OSM customs (often using spammy descriptions; not specifying an amenity/shop/office/... tag; adding a suite number to the addr:street tag). It is true that I *could* have guessed the leisure=tanning_salon from the name or looked up the URL given, but I felt that it is not my job to help the SEO company earn their money. In my mind, a POI that is just there to get a business name on the map is advertising. But I am making this edit as a private individual and not as a member of the OSMF data working group and if you, as a local mapper, would rather have the old node back then I'm happy to revert, or let you revert.

Fair enough, I monitor this area and I've certainly seen plenty of obvious SEO spam! However, if a business owner wants to get their business name in OSM, I hope it won't get flagged for removal just because they used their business name for their account and only did one badly tagged node. Note, I don't know if that is the case with this particular node, but it seems like a slippery slope.

Hi neuhausr,
Refer to the initial changeset, https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/41861684 .
There you see the particular edit was questioned by Georg but no reply was given, in over a year.
If this were to have been a legitimate business playing by OSM rules, they would have been interested enough to actually participate by replying, and would have been given tips on how to improve their edit.
There are other signatures that map-abusers leave behind, that a Real User may or may not make the same mistakes, that I also see in this particular original edit.
Hope this allays your worries about trigger-happy trashing of true truth, at least a bit. -
