Hi jmacker,
Thanks for contributing OpenStreetMap. I appreciate your localization efforts. You can use name:language=* to localize in any language. Please check previous discussions here https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/59350153#map=7/15.214/76.145. This changeset replaced many default English names of UP with other features like Wikipedia.

Hmm, my reply isn't showing yet. I'll just post another one here.
In short, Hindi is the local and official language for Hindi states. (I'm not going to bother "localizing" South Indian states)
There is absolutely no reason to use English (or romanised Hindi as the Wiki says) in place of the local language. The name tag is used only for the local language, there's no ambiguity here. Local language is what street signs, road names, etc. are written in.
The idea of using English for all of India for "consistency" is a moot point as OSM is mapped by local mappers, many of which may not know English. Gatekeeping the default language in OSM restricts OSM mapping in India to the English-speaking people (only 12% of India).
India isn't any special than other multilingual countries shown on OSM like Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, etc., all of which use multiple languages (other than English) as the default names.

I have read your answers in forum. I agree to your point that Hindi is the official language of Hindi speaking states but as far OpenStreetMap localisation concerned all along these many years is English is followed. It's convention that We as Indian community followed.
Coming to your point on South Indian languages, first try to contribute whole as Indian community not as South, North, East or something else. (And you don't need to bother about "localizing" South languages). The European countries you've pointed are different from India. You can't compare them with India where there are 22 official languages recognised.
