Farmland not rendered by mapnik?

Posted by lyx on 14 February 2009 in English.

Hi,

I'm wondering why a particular piece of farmland is not rendered by mapnik, while osmarender does not have any problem with it. In this case the farmland is on a clearing between two forests and in the center is a village with village green and pond inside. So the farmland is "outer" part in a multipolygon relation, the village is in the "inner" role and is itself the "outer" part in another multipolygon where the village green and the pond are inner parts. Maybe I messed something up here or could it be just the renderer being at fault?

Have you edited that part of the map in the past few days? It can take up to a week for detail to get added to mapnik, whereas Osmarender is a lot quicker.

While I have edited in that area in the last days (and the changes have been rendered already), that landuse=farmland has been there for more than a month.

Farmland and farmyard are approved features since August 2008, but the Mapnik developers didn't update their renderer so far. Shame on them ;-)

Shame on no-one. Something being "approved" in the wiki does not mean anything. ;)

If you want something to render in the Mapnik stylesheet, it is best to create a ticket at http://trac.openstreetmap.org . Steve Chilton, a very experienced cartographer, is administrating the Mapnik stylesheet. He tries to keep the map as clutterfree as prossible, that is why not everything is rendered by the map. If you create a trac ticket, no doubt he will look at it. He has addded many things before.

But can someone explain me the difference between landuse=farm and farmland and farmyard? Landuse=farm is rendered by mapnik.

Yes, I just noticed that farmland near by that IS being rendered by mapnik is actually tagged not as "farmland", but as "farm". Admittedly I didn't check the wiki yet; I just used what JOSM offered me to tag agricultural landuse.

In the beginning there was only landuse=farm. (This tag has been their a long time, so it is rendered in on the Mapnik layer.) Then sometime last year people on the German mailinglist got into a debate what that tag actually represented. Some people used it for the area directly around the house, barns, stables, etc. Some other people used it so it included that plus all the fields, meadows, etc. To solve that debate a new tag was proposed: landuse=farmyard. This one solely for the area directly around the house, barns, stables, etc. This tag went through the voting process on the wiki and was approved. Now some people thought this was only half a solution and wrote a proposal for a tag for only the fields, meadows, etc.: landuse=farmland. This last proposal is currently stuck in the RFC phase because of lack of interest, but it apparently appealed to whomever maintains the JOSM presets.
