Hello.
Please note that all tags ending with "_1" are invalid and must never be added to OSM. If you've seen them somewhere else, those are wrong entries and should be corrected. Please see this article that documents "name" and its variations tags in detail: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/NamesAdditionally, you deleted 2 restaurant nodes and added those tags to buildings. Looking at the street level imagery I see that each restaurant takes up only the first floor in each build and above it are apartments/offices. As such, it is incorrect to tag the whole building as being those businesses. They must be mapped as separate nodes within the perimeter of the building.

Sorry! I have seen _1 before so I thought it was ok to use. I added those tags because I feel that Nominatim's search leaves much to be desired. For example, if I search "Williamsburg Cinema" it takes me to Nitehawk Cinema, which is an entirely difference venue. However, if I search "Williamsburg Cinemas", it takes me to the correct venue.
It appears to be the case that the Nominatim search engine (which powers OpenStreetMap.org search) does not use any techniques such as stemming to match tags. Apparently, it requires the user to type in the exact feature name in order to produce the correct match. To remedy this for myself, I thought I would add multiple alt_names.
In the future I will use the advice in the article you linked: "If there are multiple names that do not fit, alt_name=* can be used with semicolons."
