Platforms are apparently considered being similar to highway=* and after this changeset there's a lot "duplicate ways" showing up on http://tools.geofabrik.de/osmi/?view=routing&lon=12.81010&lat=56.00969&zoom=12&overlays=unconnected_major1,unconnected_major2,unconnected_major5,unconnected_minor1,duplicate_ways

It seems that adding area=yes avoids upsetting OSM Inspector (and the JOSM validator, which on the other hand is upset by lots of inconspicious things). I stopped adding area=yes when I noticed it no longer makes any difference for rendering, but I could change my mind if it helps quality assurance. (I should maybe add that this series of changesets was prompted by a discussion in #osm.se about how to represent cycleways that cross platforms in a way that is both faithful to reality, router-friendly and renders well.)

Personally I do not understand the need to draw all these tiny platforms as areas. I would make them a single way (2 nodes) connected to the road by a footway. All problems solved.

I think that doesn't quite capture the fact that the platform and bike path adjoin for the length of the platform, without even a kerb between them. Anyway, now I have put area=yes on all platform areas I have edited recently.

You're correct that it doesn't quite capture that fact, but as far as I can see what I'm suggesting is what the wiki recommends too. Apart from that there's lot's of things you can't quite capture without compromising other things. In my experience there's no way we can avoid jumping some hoops here and there and in my opinion it's more important to keep things simple and working correctly with regard to routing and maintainability than to capture minor "facts".

Also in Denmark I'm making an effort to separate all sorts of polygons from any highway=*, since polygons sharing nodes with the road network tends to result in some hard to fix mistakes. I know not everyone agrees, but I've fixed far more errors than anyone else in Denmark and I'm one of very few who actually has the experience and time to fix this stuff, so I think my opion matters.

I do consider your opinion, but to go further than that I need more documentation. Could you please point me to the specific wiki page where that specific style of platform mapping is recommended, or discussions about the dangers of overlapping ways? (I try to avoid overlapping in most contexts myself.)

See under "How to Map" in http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:public_transport%3Dplatform. I don't have pointers to any such discussions. It's just my personal experience from 5000+ hours in company with JOSM. On the international IRC channel I have seen other mappers swearing at polygons overlapping highways though.

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Features#Stations_and_Stops talks about connecting platforms with footways

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure it mandates that the connection to the rest of the highway= network (which I agree is important) has to be a highway=footway, though. Actually, I broadly agree with you regarding overlapping ways: I like multipolygons and think it's usually preferable to avoid overlapping ways (and this is based on least hundreds of JOSM hours and many discussions with other mappers), but there are some cases where they are, IMHO, the best available option. For bad bike infrastructure where bikes mix with waiting bus passengers, I would prefer something similar to lane tags, but that doesn't exist (yet?). I will be going AFK for a few days now, so I apologize in advance for not replying.
