Many thanks for your changes. Given that I'm new to tagging shoulder attributes, the directional relationship to the way comes before the characteristic? shoulder:left:characteristic ?

There is no good description in the wiki I know of, but e.g. for sidewalk:* this order is used. See the german wiki page on sidewalks for an example:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:Key:sidewalkIf you check Taginfo, you see that :left is usually placed in second or third position in a longer key but not at the end like :forward/:backward:
