Hi GoWestTravel, looks like you've made a lot of useful edits to our area, and just had a couple questions about them:
The name changes... are you basing this upon a database from your work, searches, personal experience\surveying, are they semi\fully automated, or something else?
Also wondered if you had more input into the choice of tagging multiple buildings of a hotel each with the name. Seems more reasonable to me, but then makes maps a mess. And while we don't tag to the editor, seems perhaps best to avoid a messy map. I haven't tried relations before for them, like are used with schools and some other places... do they perhaps offer something better? You seem, based upon your wide array of edits, to spend a lot of time of this, so perhaps you've come across the discussions better.
Appreciate your feedback, thanks :-)

Hi JeopardyTempest,
thank you for your reaction. I truly hope the hotels I added are useful to the community. I found out many cities did not have complete and accurate hotel information and also notices hotels can be hard to fond when only the name of the chain was mentioned while having several hotels of that chain in a certain area. I found the extended name information in a work database which contain most hotels chains.
I was not aware of the fact that the combination of buildings would make a mess. Combining the buildings makes sense to me and I've checked the result early into my operation. I just saw the name of the hotel being shown over a larger area. But by no means do want to make a mess!
I did spend the last two months most if my time adding hotels to over 360 smaller and larger cities manually. But I'm afraid I can't help you much further with the discussion. But feel free to point out where discussions are held, I'll be happy to participate! I do follow the OSM subreddit.
And I'm always eager to learn how to do a better job, also with OSM. So please keep your comments coming in!
Thanks,
Hans

Hi Hans,
I certainly agree with you that there's heavy need for more complete\useful business names... been trying to update them a bit myself around Orlando, but it's certainly daunting.
My main question about the source of your database then aims at the key question... do you have direct permission from the makers of the db to use it for this? I know OSM is big on being careful with copyrights, and I can support that. Can be frustrating when the information is out there, and you want to use it, but really shouldn't. I've actually thought for a while about going through the website of larger businesses and using their own locations directory to update OSM... but as far as I understand it, even for that we'd need to get permission from each company before using it.In regards to the multiple buildings, I'm sorry, I shouldn't really say "mess". Just that when you zoom in, it displays the name in numerous places [on Open Street Maps standard map at least] (for each separate building), and so it might lead to confusion when visually looking at maps. Plus I'd think (once Nominatim processes the locations) it'd have multiple found results.
I'd seen others changing it to single location instead of multiple building, and seen how that perhaps looked better (even while having definite shortcomings of not connecting the places), so I'd started doing it that way.
I'd sort of think the address might best point to the main building as that's where you'd check-in. But then, that's still imperfect if you're delivering pizzas or something. But unless one has local knowledge, hard to map out the room numbers of separate buildings or such.
Unfortunately I don't really know any more than you do about discussions on such. I came across https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/29613/how-to-tag-a-business-with-multiple-buildings which shed some thoughts. Perhaps I should ask a question on the Tagging OSM list? I haven't followed Reddit, is it well followed? If so, it might be better than the obscure lists they have, but those are the only things I have read.
Really am glad to see you working on that so much, it seems there's a bit of this and a bit of that with OSM, and it'd be nice to something more full and mostly complete come about. If everything is good with the licensing, perhaps I can even be of help a bit, take on a bit of the work load with perhaps some of the more obscure roadside motels or such.
Regardless, thanks for the very friendly reply, and hopefully we can both come to a better understanding of works best for multi-building units and help others to so there is at least a little consistency and we're not just all taking our time changing them back and forth between the two methods!
To God be any glory,
Thanks again,

Hi Shane,
Thank you for getting back to me in such great detail!
I don't have direct permission to use the names from a database. But after I discovered that these names are used everywhere, it seemed to me that these are these names being used. If you check the website of let's say Super 8, you'll find that same name. TripAdvisor, same thing, Google mostly the same. I think if I check other sources, it will be the same name. I know about copyright issues and would not just start adding names if they weren't more generic than anything else. The companies use these themselves on their websites and in my book this means that this is what they want their hotels to be called. So I really feel I didn't overstep any borders by the use of the business names.
You convinced me not to combine the different buildings anymore and I'm sorry if that made OSM a little less clear on the places that I did do that. Fortunately it's not too many, but I'll stick to what I perceive the main building from now on. I'm pretty sure the pizza guy will still know his way around ;)
I'm not following most discussions on Reddit, but I do check it every now and then to see if there's anything new. But if there's other platforms I really should follow, please let me know! Like I said, I love to learn more.
Once again thank you and good luck mapping. I hope I answered your question and I look forward to an even better OSM experience for all!
Thanks,
Hans
