Hi-
The convention for mapping lanes is to have 1 highway represent each area of physically separated traffic, with tags adding information about lanes ( http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Lanes ).
Traffic streams that cross at grade level should also share a point.
(I'm sending this message because I came across https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/37.74491/-88.99300 where the left turn lanes are not separated by a barrier and should not be additional objects)
