Hi there. Wouldn't if an abbreviation is used or not depend on what is on the street sign?

Hello! Please don’t use abbreviation for highway names. For details read https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Names#Abbreviation_.28don.27t_do_it.29

Personally I don't. I was just pointing out there might be cases where they should be used since its what the street sign says. For instance the wiki says "If the name is incorrect when spelled in full, however, do not falsely expand it." and "you should always enter the full name as it appears on the street name signs." So it doesn't seem like a hard and fast rule. Although I can see where shortened words would cause problems with mapping software, if we expand names simply to serve the software instead of because its what the actual name is, its sort of akin to mapping for the render. At least in my opinion. Plus it could potentially cause problems for locals who are searching for a street name based on it being abbreviated and not expanded. Since that is what the sign says. Although I can see both perspectives. I will have to do more research on it.

Hallo Ad Aman T-1,
What may be printed on a physical sign will reflect a policy that transforms an official name into a shortened or abbreviated version for cost savings or brevity or modern spiffiness or whatever.
That is, these streets do not have the official and spoken name of Str or St., but if you find an official planning source where abbreviations are not used, or where common abbreviations are expanded in an appendix, assuming governments in this area work to the standards of thoroughness I expect rather than assuming the obvious, you will find the name in full.
If as you saw elsewhere, a sign-printer shop dispenses with Street or abbreviates it and you want to cater to that as well, there is a short_name or comparable tag that will allow just that.
By the way, I would prioritise the do-not-abbreviate rule over the on-the-ground rule when ordering guidelines for parsing, but that may be just me.
.
Is it just me also, or is Barn Dance Strada here a road island, with a poorly sited address node? Logically it would seem it should connect with a not-yet-drawn continuation of Bonanza Doctor bridge to the southwest... -

Hello Freebears,
Points taken. I would image what ever benefit there is, if there really are any, to keeping abbreviated names in cases where the local government has them in some cryptic document in a basement, probably isn't worth the time and effort it would take. I wasn't aware of the short_name though. I might use that in conjunction with the alt_name, local_name, historical_name, and because_I_feel_like_it_name tags in the future.
My original grip was more with the use of an absolute by the original commentator than anything else. When I first signed up many moons ago there was an discussion in the forum about if people's names could used in Afghanistan in absence of addresses so their houses could be found. Even though it violates the privacy rule. I don't think it was ever resolved, but it occasionally reminds me that there are always local variations which should be accounted for. Except for parks. They should be universally defined, but that's it.
Also, wow, how did I miss that one? I'll have to give it a once over.
