This information should be added to the wiki if there's a clear consensus on how to tag in Virginia. If the signs for, say, route 82 and route 1582 (or whatever) use the same shield, I personally think using "ref=VA *" for both makes more sense, but I'd still defer to the mappers that live there and/or travel through there often.
Virginia uses two different shields. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_highways_in_Virginia If you turn on the MapQuest Open layer, you can see the VA shields. However, those shields are only used for numbers between 1 - 599 (tagged as VA). The circle shields are for 600+, which is tagged as 'SR'.
This is why I made this note mentioning the fact since there are a lot of 'secondary' highways in this area improperly tagged as primary highways.
OK, so this is like Texas and its Farm-to-Market roads, except for not re-using the numbers. Since it's just the numbers over 600, it should be possible in theory to automatically retag everything.
Yes, something automatic might be possible for the entire state, as long as we make sure it avoids VA-895 (Toll Road and was suppose to become I-895, but never did) and VA-785 (this one uses the 'unsigned_ref' tag, so it should be easy to avoid).
Oh, and Virginia does reuse the 600+ numbers in each county. Only the primary numbers don't get reused.
Does this note still need to be open? Have the problems brought up been fixed since?
Still see a ton of improperly tagged routes here that are numbered above 600.
All roads in the area appear to have been corrected. Closing.
