I am currently occupied with completing a major survey of Arnold, near Nottingham. My goal is to map, to building level, the area approximately bounded by the A60 Mansfield Road to the west, Thackeray's Lane-Arno Vale Road-Gedling Road to the south, and Mapperley Plains Road to the east.

Current Survey (January 2021)

Howbeck Road North and surrounding area.Part of a residential estate on the edge of the Nottingham conurbation. Many of the houses around here have been built within the last 20 years, the most recent on Roxburgh Close. Very many more are planned as the estate is expanded into adjacent farmland.

Previous Surveys

Middlebeck Drive and surrounding area.The area between Coppice Road and Ladybank Rise. Suburbia. Filling the gaps. Completed January 2021

Edison Way estate and surrounding area. Edison Way is a modern residential estate built on the former headquarters of East Midlands Electricity Board. There is a mixture of housing types, and a number of multi-storey apartment buildings stand alongside more traditional housing. In common with many modern estates, there are a large number of individual residences on relatively few streets packed into a relatively small space. So finding somewhere specific can be tricky. Therefore a full survey would be a good idea. Completed July 2020

Spinningdale and surrounding area. Spinningdale is part of a large housing estate built during the early 1970's. There is no road called Spinningdale - only a path - and no vehicular access to the front of any of the houses. Access to the rear is mostly only by service roads via adjacent cul-de-sacs, which, depending on the housenumber. This makes it one of the most confusing addresses in Arnold, and therefore a candidate for a detailed survey sooner rather than later. Completed May 2020

Major survey of the area bounded by Mansfield Road-Cross Street-Coppice Road-Rolleston Drive-Sandfield Road-Arnot Hill Road-Saville Road-Arno Vale Road- Thackeray's Lane-Mansfield Road is now fairly complete (Feb 2020). However:

  • A survey of the main retail area of Front Street and east of High Street has not been carried out for some time
  • Catton Road industrial area still needs to be surveyed more fully
  • Commercial and industrial area around Arnold Business Centre still need to be surveyed more fully
