I edited several areas fixing the coastline a while ago. I first fixed the coastline here to make it not look jagged. That was over two months ago, but it still hasn’t been re-rendered. I know it was saved because the coastline doesn’t look jagged when you go and edit.

This is not the only place where this is going on. Nearby, I edited another bit of coastline that was inaccurate. See what I’m talking about here. West of the marina, the coastline is supposed to follow the purple dotted line, but the renderer has failed to update this coastline which I edited more than a month ago. Again, it is where it’s supposed to be when you look at the data layer, and in Potlatch.

But wait, there’s more! I edited another bit of coastline 3 weeks ago (Jan. 14) to make it not look like there were a bunch of roads floating on the water, as shown here. Still hasn’t updated.

I put in a render request on http://www.informationfreeway.org a few days ago, but I don’t think that helped at all. I even edited the coastline a bit just to see if that would get the renderer to do its job. If either of those things worked, I’d not be posting here. Has anyone else had this problem or do OSM’s servers just hate me? Someone please fix this, because this is unacceptable and should not be happening.

Attention programmers: I have zero programming experience, otherwise I would have never posted this and fixed this myself. So please no “fix it yourself” comments. Thanks!

Hi compdude,

as far as I know from the German discussion group your observation is completely normal.

The coastlines are updated quite infrequenly. All changes to the coastlines are checked and applied manually because they are critical. Since this is a lot of work it takes its time until changes are taken over into the map.

So you may simply have to be even more patient.

Kind regards from Germany, Heinz

Hi compdude,

Even when the coastline is updated ie coastline data from database is dumped into files used to render the map background (which is quite infrequent) the refresh is not automatic if not triggered with one of theses :

  • some data have changed in nearby tiles of the coastline
  • a manual refresh is asked for a tile near the coastline like this for example : http://a.tile.openstreetmap.org/15/5240/11437.png/dirty <- I did this one and you can see that now the coastline is smooth here !
  • a whole refresh of the coastlines is asked by the admins (very rare !)

Best regards, Vlad.

It seems that, as Vlad described, the coastline has been updated, but because no data has been changed since the update, the tiles haven’t been refreshed.

I’ve just forced the refresh at zoom 17, and the coastline is now correct. So apparently it’s eventually going to appear fine, but will take time, unless you force a refresh at each zoom level.

@Vlad, Are you saying that, in the future, should I just make some edits to other things in the vicinity of the coastline in order to force the renderer to actually update the coastline?

@compdude: no I don’t think so because if you do some change in the vicinity of the coastline it will trigger a render asap but with the old data.
